Remember when you could download ringtones on your flip phone? That was 3G wireless technology. Remember the when Apple ($AAPL) came out with the first-generation iPhone and you could send and receive images and actually get online? That was 4G. Remember the first time you could watch a YouTube ($GOOG) clips on your phone? That was 4G LTE.
More recently we have all been hearing about the Internet of Things (IoT), driverless cars and smart cities as being the next evolution of the wireless industry. But there is a problem, 4G LTE networks cannot support these devices. The next phase in wireless technology is 5G where MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology will be implemented. In a nutshell, MIMO is a network that moves information faster and farther with fewer “glitches”. These networks will make running all our IoT products feasible and be able to connect rural areas with ease.
NuRAN Wireless ($NUR.C) already received its 5G patent in Canada and the company also has a 5G patent application that has been submitted at the USPTO and is currently pending. 5G technology could revolutionize the economics of connecting peripheral communities across the world as it delivers a faster and more reliable network. Based on the most recent stats, about 50% of the world’s population is still not connected primarily because telecom operators cannot turn a profit on them... yet! This could all change thanks to NuRAN Wireless.
Closer to home, connecting the periphery has come to the forefront in Canada as well. In March 2018, the Canadian Federal Government in conjunction with the provinces of Ontario and Quebec inked a public-private partnership worth $400-million to build out 5G networks by 2020. Adding fuel to the fire, the recently elected Coalition Avenir Québec singled out the connectivity of high-speed Internet and cell coverage to all regions as being a priority. It is not unreasonable to think that one of the most advanced and credible Canadian firms in the wireless space would be able to capture a piece of the 5G business. We believe NuRAN Wireless ($NUR.C) to be an obvious a front runner here as the Québec government aims to connect those in rural Québec and we could see support from the new local government as they are quite supportive of its local companies and entrepreneurs.
